Becoming a lady

In the past five years my life has changed significantly.  The start was leaving the security of my childhood home to begin graduate school in another state.  Next was realizing I’d met the love of my life, and moving out of our school provided housing into our first apartment.  Now, with graduate degrees in hand, we’ve moved across the country to the opposite coast in pursuit of our dream careers.

Finally, it has hit me that I am "all grown up".

Within all of these major life changes, I have discovered an unstoppable urge to "nest" instinctively drawing from what feels like the energy of my grandmothers generation. I desire to make home cooked meals each night, dress elegantly and appropriately for every situation, and have an insatiable appetite to learn everything "domestic" (baking, sewing, stain removal, household organization, etc).  I find myself watching more and more classic movies with iconic figures like Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart and romanticizing of the days when men worked and women took care of the house with their hair perfectly curled, dinner ready, and a fresh martini for their husband upon his arrival home. (Maybe that is not how it really was, but that’s how I picture it)

While times have certainly changed, and women have rolled up their sleeves and joined the modern work force, I still feel all women can aspire to be a lady and retain those classic elements that made the women of that era shine.  Whether at school, home, or in the office – every woman can be a lady.  I have certainly not transformed myself into a flash back of the perfect "1960's homemaker" - instead I have begun to seamlessly blend these older traditions and lifestyles with the new and modern world.

For this blog, my goal is to share with you my everyday insights through experiments with cooking, fashion, crafts, and organization - where I am slowly piecing together my life as a lady.

I am thoroughly enjoying my newly found purpose and hope you will join me on what will surely be an incredible journey.  Stay tuned for more posts!
